Preparing for Fall in Newburyport

Here in Newburyport, we treasure the summer months, but that doesn’t mean we don’t welcome Fall. With August already here, it’s not too early to start preparing for all of the fun activities that the golden days of autumn promises. We’re getting ready for the 2015 season by looking at some of the fun activities that are on tap.

For 35 years the Fall Harvest Festival has been delighting Newburyport families and 2015 will be no exception. We’re looking forward to two full days of performances by groups like:

• Squeezebox Stompers
• 97 NORTH
• Back in Time

As always, kids can’t wait for the kid-friendly entertainment in Market Square. It goes without saying that sampling the finest local foods is also high on our list as is browsing through the local handicrafts.

We’re also anticipating Newburyport’s Oktoberfest. This fun-filled and family-friendly event happens at the end of September. We’re excited to hear the rhythm of the oompah band while dining on fantastic local bratwurst and sauerkraut. Kids love the carnival rides, and the face painting is a tradition that’s not to be missed.

Because winter tends to seem long, it’s important to make the most of the beautiful Fall days. One of our favorite ways to do this is with a visit to Joppa Flats. It’s one of the best local spots to enjoy nature’s beauty, and it offers a fascinating educational experience as well. Kids definitely don’t mind learning here.

The Joppa Flats Education Center is found inside the Parker River Wildlife Refuge. There’s no need to let rain delay your visit because a wealth of indoor and outdoor areas to explore make this is a great destination in any season. Kids love seeing the salt marshes and the wildlife that lives there. It’s fun to return in various seasons to mark the changes to the landscape and the activities of the birds and animals.
