Oral Health Problems in New Moms

Dec 17th, 2025
oral health for new mothers

We get it… when you’re a new mother, your top concern is your baby. But sometimes, this means neglecting the most important person… you! Here are some surprising ways your oral health can suffer during the first few months after your baby’s arrival, and what you can do to address them.

Why Oral Health Matters for New Moms

Postpartum changes and stress can take a toll on your mouth, teeth, and gums. Being aware of common problems helps you take preventative action.

Dry Mouth

Saliva is one of the most important (yet often overlooked) components of a healthy mouth. New mothers can get so busy that they forget to stay hydrated. This is especially crucial if you’re breastfeeding, as you’re losing more fluids to nourish your baby. Keep a water bottle nearby and sip frequently, even when you’re not thirsty, to maintain a healthy smile.

Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

The stress of having a new baby can lead to bruxism, or teeth grinding, which can damage your smile. If you wake up with jaw pain or tightness, talk to your dentist about night guards or other solutions.

Poor Habits

When life is busy, it’s easy to skip basic brushing and flossing routines. Neglecting oral hygiene can lead to gum disease, cavities, and in rare cases, oral cancers. Make time for your own care and consult your dentist if any problems arise.

Next Steps

Taking care of yourself is just as important as caring for your baby. Contact your dentist for guidance on maintaining oral health during this important stage of life. We’re here to help!
