What is Causing Your Bad Breath?

Jul 27th, 2015

Is halitosis (bad breath) interfering with your confidence or your social life? Bad breath can make it embarrassing to spend time around other people, especially when you don’t know what is causing it or how to make it stop.

Here are some of the most common causes of bad breath:

Tongue Hygiene

Approximately 90% of odor-causing oral bacteria reside on the tongue. The tiny papilla covering the tongue make an excellent surface for bacteria to adhere. For the most effective removal method, use a soft tongue scraper at least once a day. You won’t believe what comes off!

Gum Disease

Periodontal disease can create extremely bad breath that won’t go away with regular brushing and flossing. A deep cleaning is the only want to remove the calcified tartar deep under gums – the areas where the odorous bacteria are multiplying.

Diet

Dairy products and carbohydrates can create odor or feed plaque. After eating odor-causing foods, your best choice is to brush and floss thoroughly.

Medical Conditions

Health conditions that have nothing to do with your mouth can still cause bad breath. For instance, some types of cancer, heart failure, diabetes, reflux disease, kidney failure and even chronic allergies can create a foul odor inside of your mouth.

Simply covering up your bad breath with mints or rinses may be doing more harm than good. Drying out your mouth or feeding sugar to the bacteria inside of your mouth could actually make your bad breath worse rather than go away.

Even though it may feel embarrassing to ask Dr. Mathew about your bad breath problem, we promise that you aren’t the first. Dr. Mathew is here to help you identify the root cause of your bad breath and take proactive steps to stop it as quickly as possible. Schedule a dental cleaning and consultation with us today!
