Is Your City Fluoridating Their Water? Here’s One That Didn’t

May 27th, 2026

Although scientists have provided strong evidence that fluoridating drinking water helps reduce dental cavities, many cities still choose not to add fluoride to their public water supply.

If your city is considering stopping fluoridation—or if your water is not currently fluoridated—the story of Juneau, Alaska may be a wake-up call.

What Happened in Juneau, Alaska?

In 2007, Juneau stopped adding fluoride to its drinking water. Not long after, local dentists began noticing an increase in cavities across the community, especially in children.

Researchers later confirmed that after fluoride was removed, the rate of tooth decay rose. This meant more dental visits, more fillings, and more preventable oral health problems for many residents.

The Hidden Cost of Removing Fluoride

At first, stopping fluoridation may seem like a money-saving decision. Cities can reduce expenses by no longer purchasing and maintaining fluoride treatment systems.

However, the dental costs that follow can be much higher.

When cavities increase, families often face more out-of-pocket expenses for dental treatment, including fillings, crowns, and emergency visits. In many cases, these problems could have been avoided with fluoridated water.

Personal Choice vs. Public Health

Water fluoridation is often debated because it involves public policy and personal choice. If residents vote to stop fluoridation, that decision should be respected.

That said, it’s important for communities to understand the potential impact on dental health—especially for children, who benefit greatly from consistent fluoride exposure.

What to Do If Your Water Isn’t Fluoridated

If you’re concerned about your family’s oral health and your community does not fluoridate its water, talk with your dentist. There are safe and effective alternatives, such as fluoride toothpaste, fluoride rinses, and professional fluoride treatments, that can help protect teeth from decay.

If you have questions about fluoride or cavity prevention, contact our dental team at Artisan Dentistry; we’re happy to help you find the best option for your needs.
