With Cannabis Coming to Haverhill, A Reminder on Dental Impact
Mellow Fellows, a cannabis shop set to open in Haverhill, has recently scheduled a public meeting as part of its process to set up shop. As cannabis becomes more available in our local community, here are some things to keep in mind in terms of its impact on dental health.
- A dry mouth promotes cavities – One of the side effects of cannabis intake is a dry mouth. Saliva is responsible for creating an ideal environment to protect and remineralize teeth. Once it’s gone, the enamel layer isn’t built up as well and the pH of the mouth becomes more acidic, leading to tooth-decay and the growth of more harmful bacteria.
- Munchies can feed bad bacteria – Another side effect of cannabis is an increased appetite. Often the food choices while under the influence of cannabis are very heavy in simple carbohydrates that are the perfect food for the cavity causing bacteria. This, along with the mouth being drier and unable to rinse itself out as well, is the perfect storm for cavities.
- Studies have shown increased periodontal disease – Cavities are not the only thing to worry about when smoking cannabis. Studies show higher levels of gum disease in cannabis smokers than the general population, even when controlling for tobacco smoking.
Armed with this information, we hope you pay even closer attention to your oral health if you choose to smoke cannabis. Be sure to not miss your regular cleanings, and get cleanings more often if it’s what your dentist recommends.
