West Nile Virus Found in Haverhill: What does it Mean for Your Health
Here at Artisan Dentistry we take a holistic approach to dentistry and that means that we don’t just care about oral health but also overall health. With the recent discovery of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes collected in Haverhill, this is as good a time as any to discuss the health implications of the disease on the community of Newburyport, Haverhill, and surrounding towns.
First the good news: On the off chance that you get bitten by a mosquito carrying the disease, about 80% of those who get infected never show any symptoms, around 20% have mild symptoms, and only less than 1% develop severe symptoms. That being said, here are some precautions you can take.
- Use insect repellant if you’re spending time outdoors, especially at dusk. DEET at 30% concentration has been used in the military for many years and is extremely effective.
- Cover as much exposed skin as possible with loose fitting clothes. This is getting easier now that it’s getting colder outside.
- You can apply Permethrin to your clothes (but not the skin) in order to combat any mosquitos that do land on you.
- Repair screens on doors and windows in the house and don’t leave unscreened doors open for too long. If there are holes in the screens the mosquitoes will eventually find a way in during the night.
- Make sure that there is no standing water near your house for mosquitoes to lay eggs in.
As we’re always looking our for the health of our dental patients we hope you found this guide useful as you enjoy this early fall weather.
