Salem, NH: Parts Less Traveled
Salem, NH has a very rich history and much of it is disappearing with the new development around town. While progress is essential and inevitable, it’s still nice to keep a record of how things were for the sake of the curious few.
For example, did you know that Canobie Park didn’t used to be the only major attraction in Salem? This city used to be a big horse racing hub with Rockingham Park opening in 1906. These days most people think of the mall when they hear of Rockingham Park but back in the day there was a sprawling complex of buildings and a large race track. Even recent satellite pictures show the scale of the operation. But as horse racing became less popular the race track fell into disrepair and was eventually purchased by Joseph Faro of Tuscan Kitchen fame to be turned into a mixed-use development.
