Fast Food and Your Oral Health
With the new Guy Fieri, Flavortown Kitchen that recently opened up here in Salem, it’s important to remember how fast food impacts your health. Many don’t realize the impacts that these types of foods have on your teeth, so keep reading to learn more before you chow down.
Starches & Your Teeth
Pizza, burgers, and french fries are delicious but high in starch content. Starch sticks to your teeth where it can stay for a while. If you forget to brush or floss your teeth after eating fast food these particles can settle in your teeth and cause bacterial growth. “Bad” bacteria in your mouth only leads to tooth decay and cavities.
Sugary Drinks
As we all may know, sodas are very bad for your teeth! Carbonated beverages can destroy enamel with its high acidity. The sugars in the drink mixed with the bacteria in your mouth causes acid to destroy your teeth and cause erosion.
Salty Foods
Diets rich with large amounts of sodium are not good for your health, including your oral health. Too much sodium can lead to dry mouth and excessive dryness in the mouth can indirectly cause cavities and gum disease since saliva protects teeth.
In reasonable portions and quantities, fast food is not overtly harmful. Issues can only arise when overconsumption becomes out of control. Next time you enjoy fast food, keep in mind the amount you devour and the possible repercussions on your oral health.
